My rear shocks were shot for a year before I noticed

Last month I finally crawled under my 2004 Tacoma to chase a clunk that got worse every week. Turns out both rear shocks were leaking and the bushings were basically gone. I drove around like that for a year, maybe 8,000 miles, and the truck actually rode fine on pavement. It wasn't until I took it on a gravel road outside of Bend that the rear end started skipping sideways. Cost me $220 for a set of Bilsteins and about 3 hours in my driveway. I check my front suspension all the time but completely ignored the rear. Has anyone else found that rear components wear out silently while the front gets all the attention?

Damn, that made me rethink my whole checklist. Rear's been ignored way too long.
