TIL a guy in Flagstaff runs 33s on stock gears and swears it tows fine

Was reading through an old build thread last night and a guy out of Flagstaff said he has been running 33 inch tires on his stock 3.73 gears for 4 years with a small trailer and never regeared. I always figured anything past 32s meant you had to drop $1,500 on gears or you were cooking the trans. Made me wonder if half the regear advice I see online is just people repeating what they read. Anyone here actually run bigger tires on stock gears long term, or is he just lucky?
