I finally caught on that I was using AI art tools completely backwards

I spent about 6 months generating images by typing super vague prompts like 'a cat in a hat' and getting mad when the results were garbage. Then a buddy at a coffee shop in Portland showed me his workflow where he sketches a rough composition first in Photoshop, then runs it through Stable Diffusion for refinement. Turns out I was treating AI like a magic genie instead of a collaborator. Has anyone else had that moment where they realized they were approaching these tools wrong from day one?

Girl, that's exactly how most of us start out. You're definitely not alone in that frustration. It's like we all had this idea that AI would just read our minds and produce exactly what we wanted, and then we wonder why it spits out nonsense. @hall.nora you've got it mostly right, but here's the thing. It's not that the AI can't read your mind or needs clearer direction. The real issue is that we forget these models are just pattern matchers. They don't understand what you're asking, they just predict what words usually come after other words. That's a huge difference people miss. So when you think you're being clear, the model might latch onto a different pattern than you intended. It's less about it being a talented assistant and more about knowing how to trick the pattern recognition into giving you what you want. Does that make sense or am I overcomplicating it?
