I finally stopped relying on vague AI prompt tricks after one bad result

I used to think adding 'think step by step' to every prompt would magically fix my outputs. For months I did this for my side project generating product descriptions. Last week I asked an AI to summarize a 20 page PDF about machine learning benchmarks and got back something that sounded like a fifth grader wrote it. The weird part was it actually used the phrase 'step by step' in the response. That's when I realized I was just lazy with my instructions. Now I write specific context like 'focus on the cost comparison between AWS and Azure for training models under $5000.' It makes a huge difference. Has anyone else had a similar moment where you stopped using generic prompts and saw better results?

Read a post on Hacker News last week where someone proved adding 'take a deep breath' to their prompts improved results more than 'think step by step' ever did. That whole approach of tricking an AI with generic phrases feels a lot like superstition now, like wearing your lucky socks to a job interview. Getting specific with your instructions is just better because you're actually telling the model what you need instead of hoping for magic words to work.
