Torqued my spark plugs by feel for a year, then a rental gauge humbled me
I worked at a little GA shop outside Tulsa, and I never owned a torque wrench for spark plugs, just did the good ol' snug plus a quarter. Last week a customer brought in his own digital torque adapter and asked me to check my work on his Cessna. Every single plug was over by 15 to 25 foot-pounds, and I felt my face go red right there on the ramp. Now I use the adapter every time, but I still wonder how many other guys swear by the feel method. Anyone else ever got shown up by a cheap rental tool like that?

Man, that hits close to home. Same thing happened to me with my old truck, always did the snug plus a quarter and thought I was golden. Borrowed a buddy's click-type wrench one weekend and found out I'd been cranking everything way past spec for years. Felt like a total idiot standing there in the driveway with the tool in my hand. Now I keep a cheap beam style one in the toolbox just for peace of mind... it's humbling how easy it is to fool yourself with feel.
