Tried speed tape on a worn fairing screw hole last week, and an old A&P at our hangar showed me a better way with a rivnut
Last Tuesday I was buttoning up a 172 after annual and one of the cowl fasteners had wallowed out its hole, so I reached for the usual speed tape fix like I have done a hundred times before. An old A&P named Dale watched me for a minute, then pulled out a rivnut and a squeeze tool and had it done in under 10 minutes flat. That rivnut held torque like it was factory, and the tape job I did on the other side peeled off by Thursday's preflight. I checked our log sheet and we had three write-ups on that same cowl in the past 8 months, all from bad screw holes. So what are you all doing for worn out fastener holes, sticking with tapes and oversize screws or going the nutplate route?
