Dropped $85 on a 'mint' used turntable at a garage sale in Cleveland and it was a furniture piece
Saw an ad for a Technics SL-D2 at a garage sale over on Lorain Ave about three weeks back, and the seller swore up and down it worked great. I get there, it powers on, platter spins, looks clean, so I hand over $85 and drive home happy. Come to find out the tonearm wiring is shot, the cartridge is some no name thing from the 80s, and the pitch control drifts so bad it sounds like a tape being eaten. Took it to a shop on the west side and the guy quoted me $140 just to rewire it, which is more than the table is worth. I ended up selling it for $30 to a guy who just wanted it for parts, so I'm out $55 and a Saturday afternoon. Next time I'm bringing my own record and headphones to test anything before cash changes hands. What's your go to test record when you're checking out a used table?
