Why does anyone bother with digital tuners on old receivers?
Honestly, I spent a whole weekend comparing a 1978 Kenwood KR-4070 against a 1990s Sony with a digital tuner, same antenna, same FM station. The Kenwood pulled in the weak college radio signal crystal clear while the Sony just hissed and dropped out. Is there a real circuit reason for this or are digital tuners just overcomplicated junk?

Swapped in a decent external antenna on my old digital tuner and it made a world of difference, most of the hiss came from the cheap built-in one. Sometimes it's the antenna, not the circuit, that's the real weak link.
