Guy at the community garden said my bokashi bucket was "cheating" and I've been mad about it for a week
I was dumping my bokashi bucket at the shared compost pile on Saturday and this guy I've nodded at for two years finally spoke up, just to tell me that fermenting my scraps first was "cheating" compared to his worm bin. Here's the thing: I live in a 400 square foot studio in Portland with no balcony, so a worm bin was never going to work for me, and my bokashi setup cost me about $35 total plus a bag of bran every couple of months. It handles everything his worms can't, like onion skins, citrus, and the fish scraps from my roommate's tuna melts, and it doesn't smell at all if you drain the tea every few days. I told him my bucket has processed every scrap from my kitchen for 14 months straight and never once attracted fruit flies, while his bin froze solid in January and he had to toss half of it. Composting isn't a contest and there's no prize for doing it the hard way when you live in a box with no yard. Anyone else get grief from the yard-having crowd for using a method that actually fits their apartment?
