Vent: Customer's cheap DIY fix cost me a whole Saturday
Last weekend I got called to a house in Akron for a fridge that wasn't cooling. The guy told me he already tried replacing the start relay after watching a video. When I opened the back panel, I saw he had wired it with speaker wire and electrical tape. The compressor had been cycling hard for two days and finally seized up. He was furious when I told him the fix was now a full compressor replacement, around $650 with labor. I showed him the melted wire ends and explained how the amperage cooked the motor. I ended up eating the diagnostic fee just to calm him down. Has anyone else dealt with a homeowner whose online fix caused way more damage than the original problem? How do you break that news without sounding like you're just upselling? That's the part of this job that drains me more than the physical work.
