Climbing spikes on a 60 foot oak versus a rope and harness, and wow what a difference
I got hired to deadwood a big oak in Asheville two weeks ago and my spike set kept slipping on the bark near the top, so I switched to a rope and harness setup about halfway up. The spikes were faster on the way up but I was gassing out fighting for footholds on the slick spots, and with the rope I could actually sit back and rest my legs. Took me 20 extra minutes to rig the line but I finished the crown cuts without my calves burning. What do you all run for oaks with thick bark like that, spikes or do you just deal with the setup time?
