Hot take: I quit hand-pruning young trees and switched to a pole saw with a light head
Honestly, for about 10 years I did all my young tree work by hand, ladder and loppers and a folding saw, and it wrecked my shoulders. Last spring I picked up a Stihl pole saw with a light head and started using it on everything under 20 feet, and my trimming time on a row of 12 street trees in Tacoma dropped from most of a day to about 3 hours. The big change was reach, I can stand on the ground and make a clean cut instead of dragging a ladder around and stepping up and down. The cuts are cleaner too, a sharp chain leaves a flatter face than my old bypass loppers ever did. My foreman was not sure at first, he said the chain would chew up the collars, but when he saw the finish on a couple of maples he backed off. I still hand prune anything I can reach from the ground because it feels better on small wood. Curious if other folks are going the same way on young stock or if I'm just getting lazy in my old age?
