Paid $400 for a stump grinder rental and barely broke even, worst mistake this spring

I got this bright idea in April to rent a big stump grinder from the place out on Route 9 instead of just subbing the work out. Thought I'd save money on three big oak stumps in a backyard. Turns out I forgot to calculate my time. Took me 2 full days because one stump had a massive root system and the machine kept clogging. By the time I factored in the rental, fuel, and the extra chipper I needed, I basically paid myself minimum wage. Plus I couldve done two other paying jobs instead. Anyone else ever try to DIY a rental and lose money on it? What do you guys charge per stump when you sub it out, just so I know for next time?
