Vent: stop limb walking out past 2/3 of the branch, I learned this the hard way on a red oak in Tulsa
A red oak I was deadwooding on a job in Tulsa had a long lateral limb and I walked way out past the halfway point because the tie-in point looked solid and I wanted to reach the last few dead hangers without moving my rope. The branch cracked right behind my feet, I dropped about 6 feet before my flip line caught and I just hung there looking at the split wood. The limb was hollow from old storm damage even though the bark looked fine from up top. I should have moved my tie-in forward and used a second climb line on the leader next to it instead of trusting one anchor point. Has anyone here got a rule of thumb for spotting hidden decay in red oaks before you commit your weight to a limb?
