I've been working this small Roman era site near Bath for about 8 months now. We always relied on the original 1920s survey maps to plan our trenches. Last week a colleague from the university brought out a LiDAR drone and we did a full scan of the field. The difference was huge. The old maps showed the main villa outline but missed all these smaller crop marks that LiDAR picked up like crazy. Turns out there's a whole secondary building complex about 40 meters east that we completely walked past. I spent 3 days rechecking the ground and the pottery scatter matches what the scan shows. Has anyone else had a moment where new tech made old records look almost useless? I'm curious if I should redo other parts of the site too.
