Showerthought: every documentary about the terracotta army says the statues were 'buried to protect the emperor' and that's just not what the pits show
I watched three different history docs on the terracotta army last month and all three said the same thing, that the figures were buried to guard Qin Shi Huang in the afterlife. That bugs me because the pits aren't a tomb guard setup, the soldiers face east in battle formation with chariots and crossbows, which reads like an army on campaign, and the whole site sits about a mile from the actual burial mound. Some of the figures also had real weapons in their hands that got looted later, which sure doesn't fit a quiet burial offering. Has anyone here actually read the excavation reports from Pit 1, and do they back up the guardian story or is it just a lazy line that got copied around?
