Moved to Concord and found a cheaper way to heat: debate time on wood stove vs. mini-split
So when I moved to Concord two winters ago, I was burning through $350 a month on oil and it felt like I was just throwing money out the window. A neighbor told me to try a wood stove insert instead of relying on the furnace, and I found a used one on craigslist for $400. I installed it myself with a kit from the hardware store, total cost around $700 with the liner. That first winter I spent about $800 on cordwood and cut my oil use down to almost nothing, maybe $100 a month just for backup heat. But now my buddy keeps telling me I should switch to a mini-split because he says the wood smoke bugs his allergies and it's more work than it's worth. I admit stacking and hauling wood is a chore, but I like the heat and the savings. So here's the debate: is a wood stove still the best budget move in NH, or is a mini-split actually cheaper in the long run once you factor in the install cost and electricity? I'm curious what other locals think, especially if you've switched from one to the other.
