That Maple Syrup I Bought Off a Guy on Route 4 Was Fake

Stopped at a roadside stand near Canterbury last fall and paid $30 for what he called "pure Vermont maple." Got home, boiled it down for a glaze, and it just turned into watery sugar sludge. Took me three batches and a call to the state ag department to confirm it was corn syrup. Anyone else get burned by a setup like that?

Man that exact thing happened to me near Waterbury a couple years ago. Paid $40 for what they swore was real syrup and it was just corn syrup with maple flavoring. I tried to reduce it for a bourbon glaze and ended up with a sticky mess.

40 bucks says you got exactly what you paid for then. Real syrup from a legit sugarhouse runs closer to 60 or 70 a quart around here. You can’t blame the fake syrup for ruining your glaze when you tried to turn corn syrup into a gourmet reduction. That’s on you, not the shady vendor.
