Went to a packed museum exhibit in Chicago and nobody was reading the wall text

I visited the Art Institute last Wednesday and watched 30 people snap photos of a painting without looking at the plaque next to it. The wall text explained the artist painted it during a war and the details added so much meaning. Am I the only one who thinks we miss a lot by just glancing and moving on?

Last week at the MCA I saw a family walk right past a whole timeline of the artist's life to get a selfie with the painting. I actually stood there and read the whole thing out loud to my friend because nobody else was even looking at it. The context made the piece so much better too.

Did you ask the family if they even knew what the painting was about, or were they just there for the gram?
