A guy at the Grand Rapids star party handed me his 8 inch Dob and I finally saw Saturn's rings
I've been messing with my little 4.5 inch reflector for about 8 months and honestly the planets always looked like tiny fuzzy dots. Last Saturday I drove out to a dark sky spot near Grand Rapids, Michigan for a local club meetup, mostly just to see what everyone else was shooting. This older guy named Walt noticed me squinting at my screen and asked if I wanted a look through his 8 inch Dobsonian pointed at Saturn. I put my eye up and literally gasped out loud, the rings were just THERE, clean and sharp with a gap you could actually see. He didn't say much, just smiled and said "that's the size jump, kid" and let me sit there for like 15 minutes. Now I'm sitting here staring at used scope listings wondering if I save up or just keep trying with what I've got. Anyone here jump from a small reflector to an 8 inch and was it actually worth the money?
