Spent $220 on a used tracking mount and it changed my star trail shots

Bought a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer off a guy in Denver for $220. My first night out it tracked perfectly for 90 second subs and I finally got the Andromeda galaxy without streaks. Problem is I skipped the $40 counterweight and my tripod tipped over around 2am. Anyone running one of these, do you balance with the weight or just trust the clutch?
