Guy at the parts counter in Dayton said "just buff it out" and I laughed until I cried
I was picking up a gallon of clear coat at my supplier in Dayton on Tuesday and this fella walks up with a quarter panel that looked like it lost a fight with a shopping cart. He tells the counter guy he wants to fix it himself and the guy looks him dead in the eye and says "just buff it out." I about dropped my coffee. That panel had creases you could hold water in and the paint was cracked all the way to the primer. Buddy actually bought a $14 buffing pad and walked out happy. I stood there thinking about all the jobs I have eaten because a customer watched one video and thought bodywork was just polishing. I get it though, we all started somewhere and I once tried to pull a dent with a toilet plunger on my mom's Civic, so who am I to judge. But it got me wondering how many cars out there got smeared with glaze and sold before the shine wore off. What is the worst DIY repair you have had to undo on somebody else's ride?
That counter guy did that fella dirty and probably knew it too. But the real problem is the guy selling a car with a quarter panel packed full of filler and a fresh coat of glaze, because that shine holds for maybe six months and then the cracks show up. Worst one I ever had to undo was a rear door someone "fixed" with spray foam and Bondo over wet metal, and the foam was still soft when I cut into it. I charged the guy double just for the smell.
