I finally switched to a DA sander after 15 years of blocking by hand
Back when I started at my uncle's shop in Philly, blocking was the only way I knew. You'd spend 45 minutes on a single quarter panel, arms aching, dust everywhere. Last spring I grabbed a used Dynabrade DA off Craigslist for $80 and it cut my time down to maybe 15 minutes for the same spot. The finish is way more even too, less guesswork. Any of you old timers still blocking by hand or did I wait too long to make the switch?

Are you sure DA sanders are really that much more forgiving?

I remember reading somewhere that DA sanders actually cut down on the chance of burning through the clear coat compared to hand blocking, which makes sense with how much more even the pressure is. Good deal on that Dynabrade find, by the way.
