My rain shell failed in the Smokies and I'm done with ultralight gear

Last month on the AT near Clingmans Dome, that 9 ounce shell I spent $180 on soaked through in about 40 minutes of steady drizzle. I ended up shivering under a tarp while my buddy in a $60 heavy jacket stayed bone dry the whole trip. Everyone raves about going light, but nobody talks about how fragile that stuff gets after just 20 trail days. Anyone else ditch the fancy gear and go back to heavier, boring reliability?
