The difference between the PCT in 2012 and now is wild
I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail back in 2012 and went again last summer. Back then, I carried a 4 pound tent and a paper map that got soaked in Oregon. Now everyone's got these 1 pound DCF shelters and a phone with GPS. The hiker culture shifted too. People used to stop and chat at water caches for an hour. Last year, half the folks I passed just had earbuds in and kept walking. Anyone else notice how much more isolated the trail feels?

Tell my 2012 self I'm now carrying a 1 pound tent and still somehow managed to pack 12 pounds of snacks for the first three days. It's like we traded heavy gear for lighter packs but filled them up with MORE gadgets and anxiety about battery life. At least back then when my paper map turned into a wet sponge I had a good excuse to stop and chat with strangers for directions.
