Shoutout to the guy at the Roseville ReStore who showed me fence posts should sit ABOVE the dirt line
Four years ago I set 22 fence posts by just dumping a bag of concrete right on top of the soil and calling it done. Last month the whole east run started leaning like it had one too many, so I pulled one out and the bottom 8 inches of the post was basically mush. The older fella at the ReStore in Roseville glanced at my phone photo and said you have to mound the concrete up so it crowns above grade, otherwise water just sits there eating the wood. He grabbed a scrap of 2x4 and drew it right on the counter so I could see the slope. Redid all 22 posts that way two weekends ago with about $60 in extra mix and every single one is rock solid now. Any of you ever crown your concrete like that, or do you go the gravel route at the bottom of the hole instead?
