One rough week with hawk attacks and a stubborn rooster
Last Tuesday I lost two hens to a hawk in one hour. Then my rooster Duke started hiding in the coop instead of sounding the alarm. I spent three days building a PVC hoop cover, cost about $35 in netting. The very next morning Duke finally squawked and chased the hawk off. Crazy how one bad week flips everything once you figure out the weak point. Has anyone else dealt with a rooster that goes silent in a crisis? What worked for you?

Calling it "one bad week" is a stretch when hawks are a permanent thing. Netting on hoops is fine until snow piles on it or a hawk just walks under the edge, and that PVC gets brittle after a season in the sun. Roosters go quiet for real reasons too, often they're young, low on the pecking order, or they just don't have the instincts, and one good morning doesn't prove Duke fixed anything. Odds are the hawk already got its meal that week and moved on to easier birds.
