Why does nobody tell new chicken people about the deep litter smell fix?
A guy at the feed store in Tulsa asked how often I clean my coop and I said every Saturday, and he just shook his head and said try deep litter and stop hauling bedding out every week. I was skeptical but gave it a shot with about 4 inches of pine shavings and I turn it with a rake every few days instead of stripping it. It took around 6 weeks to really start working, the coop stopped smelling like ammonia, and now I only do a full cleanout twice a year. He also told me to toss in a handful of scratch so the girls keep it turned over for me, which sounds lazy but it works. My egg count didn't change at all, 8 hens and still 6 to 7 a day, so it didn't hurt anything. Anyone else here run deep litter in a small coop, and how thick do you keep yours in summer?
