A guy at the Grand Canyon star party let me look through his 12 inch Dob and I finally saw the Ring Nebula
I drove up to the south rim back in June for the star party they do there every summer, mostly just to get away from the light dome over my place in Phoenix. This older guy named Walt had a 12 inch Dob set up and I asked if I could take a peek, and he ended up spending 45 minutes showing me how to actually find things instead of just hunting around. When I finally got the Ring Nebula in the eyepiece I just stood there quiet for a while, because I'd been trying to spot it from my yard for almost two years with no luck. He told me my problem was that I kept trying to see it right over the city glow, which I honestly never thought about. Now I'm wondering how many of you drive out to darker sites on a regular basis, and how far you're willing to go for it.
