Everyone says get a bigger scope, but a night at a star party in Joshua Tree with a $60 pair of binoculars changed my mind
I was at a star party near Joshua Tree about 4 months ago and a guy named Walt let me look through his 10 inch dob. Great view of Saturn, sure. But then he pulled out these old 7x50 binoculars and we just laid back on a blanket and swept through the Milky Way. I saw more that way in 20 minutes than I had in a year with my cheap 4 inch scope. The wide field thing is real. Star clusters like the Pleiades just fit in one view. My scope still gets used for planets but most clear nights now I grab the binoculars and a lawn chair. Anyone else find they use less gear as they go, or am I just getting lazy?
