Guy at the campground told me my binoculars were a waste of money and honestly it bugged me all week
So last weekend I was up at Bear Creek Lake near Morrison with my 10x50 binoculars and a guy a few spots over sees me staring up at Saturn and goes "you know those cheap things won't show you anything, you need a real scope." I laughed it off but it stuck with me. Here is the thing, I have been using those same binos for 2 years and I have found the Andromeda galaxy, watched Jupiter's moons shift night to night, and tracked the ISS more times than I can count. A decent pair runs about $120 and packs into a jacket pocket, no tripod, no collimation, no lugging a 40 pound tube down the stairs. People act like you need a $600 setup to enjoy the sky from your own yard and it turns new folks off before they even start. My neighbor borrowed mine for one evening and found the Pleiades in ten minutes flat. So what is the actual floor here, is there a setup under $200 that beats plain binoculars or is that just gatekeeping talking?
