Burned the paddle on my old KitchenAid trying to mix some seriously stiff shortbread dough once. The whole motor just groaned and stopped, and I thought I broke it for good. Turned out the dough was just too thick, and I had to let it rest for like ten minutes before it would even budge again. Definitely learned the hard way that not all recipes play nice with a stand mixer.

Use a trick I picked up from an old baker - put the paddle in warm water for a minute before you start mixing stiff doughs. It loosens everything up and takes some strain off the motor. Also, if the dough feels too thick after a few minutes, just stop and scrape it down by hand. Let the mixer rest for a bit too, those things can overheat if you push them too hard. I keep a cheap hand mixer around for stuff like shortbread now, saves the expensive stand mixer for lighter jobs. Your poor KitchenAid was probably begging for a break long before it actually gave out on you
