My bank teller in Phoenix told me to quit rounding up my card purchases to the nearest dollar, and she was right
I used to do that thing where every debit card purchase got rounded up to the next dollar and the extra change went into savings. Felt smart, felt like I was tricking myself into saving without thinking. Then about 8 months ago I was at my bank branch in Phoenix making a deposit and the teller, Angela, asked if I wanted to review my account activity with her. I said sure, and she pulled up my statements and pointed at all these little $0.35, $0.60, $0.12 transfers. She said, 'You know you moved $47 last month but you also overdrafted twice because that $2.99 coffee became an even $3.00 at the wrong time.' I never thought about how the round up hits your balance right away, before the actual purchase even clears. I switched to a flat $75 auto transfer every payday instead and I have not overdrafted once since March. It is boring but boring is what works I guess. Has anyone else had a teller or banker point out something about their own account they somehow never noticed?
