Bought a $1 box of random buttons at a church sale in Dayton, found 14 matching brass coat buttons
I grabbed a sandwich bag full of loose buttons for a dollar at a church rummage sale in Dayton two Saturdays ago, mostly because my winter coat is missing two and replacements cost $8 online. When I dumped them out to sort by size, there were exactly 14 brass buttons from the same maker in there, enough to redo the whole coat plus have spares. Has anyone else scored a matching set like this from a junk box, or am I just weirdly lucky with buttons?
Check the backs of those buttons for a maker's mark before you sew anything on, because brass sets from the same maker often came off old military coats and the shanks can be corroded even when the front looks fine. Test each one by giving it a good tug with pliers, and if any bend or snap, keep them as spares and only use the solid ones. Did all 14 come out the same size, or is there a mix of cuff and front buttons in there?
