Can we talk about fixing broken finds instead of tossing them?

I found a beat up 1980s lamp at a yard sale in Akron for $3, missing the cord and shade. My buddy said I was wasting my time, that nobody rewires stuff at thrift prices anymore, they just buy new. Then I spent an hour fixing it for under $10 and it works perfect, but he still thinks I'm crazy for the effort. So which side are you on, do you restore the broken bargain or do you only grab stuff that's ready to use?
