Thrift store tape measure was 3/8 inch off, ruined my shelf project

Picked up an old Stanley tape measure at a garage sale in Dayton for 50 cents last month. Thought I was being smart saving money until I cut all my shelf boards 3/8 inch short because the hook was bent. Double check any used measuring tools against a straight edge or ruler before you trust them on a real job.

So you're saying the tape measure was wrong, but have you checked if maybe your floor is actually uneven and the boards were the right length all along? Used tools are always a gamble, but 50 cents for a Stanley that still works fine if you just add 3/8 to every cut seems like a fair trade to me.
