Hot take: a 2 cent zip tie fixed a ghost shifting problem I chased for a month
Had a customer's bike in the stand 4 times in 3 weeks with a rear derailleur that would not hold its index on rides over 20 miles. I checked hanger alignment twice, swapped cables, even threw on a different wheel with a fresh cassette, and nothing showed up in the stand. Turns out the cable housing was sliding just a hair inside the frame stop under the bottom bracket whenever the rear triangle flexed, which changed the effective cable length. I wrapped a small zip tie around the housing right at the stop to pin it, and the shifting has been dead on for 6 weeks of hard riding. Wish I could say I figured it out with brains but honestly I spotted it by wiggling stuff while a coworker pedaled on the trainer. Anyone else run into housing creep at a frame stop, and do you fix it with a zip tie or something cleaner?
