I finally understood why the old guy at my shop always hand spun every wheel before touching the truing stand
An old timer at the shop in Reno spent 20 minutes just spinning a customer's rear wheel by hand last Tuesday before he even mounted it in the stand, and I kept thinking he was wasting time on a $40 true job. He showed me the rim had a flat spot from a pothole hit and told me the stand would have me chasing a wobble that wasn't there. How do you all spot damage like that before you start dialing spokes, or do you just throw it in the stand and deal with it?
