Thought sealed cartridge bearings were a gimmick until I rebuilt a hub with 8,000 miles on it
I used to tell customers that loose ball hubs were the only way to go, mostly because that's what I was taught back when I started. A guy brought in his commuter bike from Portland with a rear hub that had seen 8,000 wet miles of riding, and I opened it up expecting a pile of rust. The sealed cartridges were still smooth enough that I just swapped the outer seals and repacked them, took 20 minutes total. So now I'm wondering, are loose ball hubs actually better, or do we just repeat what our mentors told us? What convinced you either way on this one?
