Overheard my neighbor say she skipped the last 3 episodes of The Penguin

I was out watering my plants and heard her tell her friend she just couldn't get into it after episode 2, but that's when the show really picks up with the whole power struggle. It made me wonder if people give up too fast on shows that build slowly. Has anyone else noticed their friends quitting on a series right before it gets good?

Oh man, that's such a bummer! I really feel for her because that show is one of those that takes its time but the payoff is totally worth it. I mean, if you bail after just two episodes you miss all the crazy stuff that happens with the political maneuvering and the family drama. My best friend almost quit on The Leftovers after the first three episodes and I had to beg her to keep going, now she says it's one of her all time favorites. It's like people forget that some stories need room to breathe before they really hook you. Idk, maybe it's just me but I've learned the hard way to give a show at least half a season before calling it quits.

Needs room to breathe" is just a nice way of saying "has a boring first few episodes." Look, I get that some shows take time. But my time is valuable too, you know? If I'm 2 hours in and not feeling it, that's a whole movie's worth of my life gone. People act like quitting a show is some kind of character flaw. It's not. It's just a TV show. She's not wrong for not forcing herself through something she doesn't enjoy. The Penguin is fine but it's not exactly high art. Besides, if a show can't hook you in the first couple hours, that's kind of on the writers. Not everyone has the patience for a slow burn, and that's okay. Life's too short to watch TV you hate.
