Tried forge welding a railroad spike to a coil spring last week...
The thing just exploded in the slack tub and now I'm wondering if the carbon content difference was way bigger than I thought, has anyone else had something fly apart like that?

Right after I had a piece of rebar do the same thing, @andrew854. Guess my forge welding skills are about as solid as my Saturday plans.

Yeah, that "exploded in the slack tub" part got my attention. I used to think carbon content didn't matter that much for forge welding, but watching something pop like that changed my mind real quick.
