The first fan binding I did vs. the one I finished this week

Started bookbinding in January with a $40 starter kit and a YouTube video, and my first attempt had gaps in the spine you could fit a pencil through... this week I finished a 400-page novel and the hinges are so clean I keep opening and closing it just to hear the creak. What was the biggest difference you noticed between your first and your latest bind?
