A botanist at the Tucson botanical garden poked my pothos cutting and asked if I was trying to rot it

I was at the Tucson Botanical Gardens last month for their plant swap and this older lady running the propagation table picked up my pothos cutting and asked why the node was buried so deep. She pulled it out and showed me the node needs to sit right at the soil line or slightly above, not under it, because that's where rot starts. So now I just lay the node on top and poke the roots down, has anyone else had better luck that way or am I overthinking it?
