Pro tip: rub your houseplant leaves with a banana peel once a week, mine pushed out a new leaf after 3 weeks
My mom told me this old trick about 2 years ago and I laughed it off until my rubber plant in my bedroom started looking rough last month. The leaves were dusty and dull so I wiped each one down with the inside of a banana peel, then buffed them with a damp cloth. Three weeks later it grew a brand new leaf and the older ones look way shinier. I have no clue if it's the potassium or just the wiping, but it worked. Has anyone else tried this on plants with fuzzy leaves or is that a bad idea?
My gut says the shine is just from the wiping and the new leaf is probably a coincidence, since banana peels mostly sit on top of the leaf and do not soak in. Plants push out new growth when light, water, and temp line up, and dusting alone can wake a sad plant up. Fuzzy leaves are a whole other story though, since that stuff can clog the little hairs and cause rot, so I would skip the banana on those.
