Can we talk about the $180 I dropped on a grain mill I used twice?
Six months ago I got it in my head that I was going to grind my own flour and bake bread every week to cut grocery costs, so I ordered a hand-crank mill for $180. The math looked great on paper: a 25 lb bag of wheat berries runs about $20 at the co-op in Greenfield, way cheaper than flour. Then I actually tried it. Forty minutes of cranking got me maybe 4 cups of flour, my arm was dead, and the loaf came out dense as a brick. The mill has sat on my shelf since April while I keep buying the $4 bags at the store like a chump. My real advice is to borrow one first or just buy flour and put the money toward a chest freezer, which has actually saved me money. Has anyone here made a grain mill work for them, or did you give up like I did?
