Dried beans from the bulk bin beat canned, but only if you plan ahead

I grabbed 3 pounds of pintos from the co-op in Portland for $4.20. Forgot to soak them one night, tried the quick soak method, and they still took 2 hours to soften. The texture was way better than canned, firmer and no weird salty brine. My electric bill went up maybe a buck for the stove time, still cheaper than 8 cans at $1.50 each. Anyone else do a weekend bean batch and freeze portions? I need a system that doesn't rely on me remembering to soak.

3 pounds for $4.20 is a steal. Cook a big pot Sunday, freeze in 2 cup bags, and you never touch canned again.
