Warning: my DIY root cellar in the garage flooded after 11 days because I skipped one gravel layer
I dug 3 feet down, lined it with cinder blocks and plastic, stacked 40 lbs of potatoes and squash inside, and woke up to 4 inches of standing water because a neighbor who's been doing this for 20 years in Vermont later told me you need at least 6 inches of crushed stone under the floor before the plastic goes down, or the spring melt just wicks straight up through the block, so has anyone in New England actually made one of these work without a sump pump?
