That $5 thrift store burr grinder turned out to be my best coffee find ever

I picked up a random burr grinder at a Goodwill in Omaha for $5 last month, just figured it'd be a backup for emergencies. Got it home and cleaned out the old coffee dust (took like 20 minutes with a brush), then ran some beans through it. Turned out it grinds way more even than my $40 new one from Amazon. Guess I learned that sometimes the old stuff just holds up better, especially if someone took care of it. Anyone else have a lucky find from a secondhand shop that surprised you?

Oh man, that's such a great feeling when you score something like that! I found a vintage French press at a garage sale for like three bucks and thought it was just a fun decor piece. Finally decided to try it out and it makes such a clean cup of coffee, way better than the modern one I was using before. I spent an afternoon scrubbing the metal mesh with vinegar and baking soda, and it came out looking brand new. Makes you wonder what other hidden gems are sitting on those shelves, right?

Right, "hidden gems sitting on those shelves" - that's usually where I find the stuff I buy and then realize I already have three of at home. I'm pretty sure my garage sale collection is just a museum of my own forgetfulness at this point. But hey, at least I'm an expert at cleaning vintage gear, so that's something.

Got a $3 hand-cranked grinder at an estate sale that still works like a dream after I oiled the wooden handle. Funny how the old stuff just lasts, isn't it?
