Am I the only one who never knew a library card gets you free museum passes?
My neighbor Carla caught me at the mailbox last Tuesday and asked why I was paying for stuff I could get free. I laughed it off at first, she is 71 and knows everything about everything. She pulls a card out of her purse, plain blue, nothing special, and says this gets her into 3 museums and the botanical garden near downtown for zero dollars. I looked it up that night and sure enough, our city library has this program where you check out a pass like a book. You get it for 7 days, prints out on plain paper, no catch. I took my two kids to the science museum Saturday and saved $58 on admission. The whole thing felt almost too easy, like somebody was going to stop us at the door. Anyone else using their library for stuff besides books? What else am I sleeping on here?
So it saves you a few bucks on a Saturday, that's cool and all, but is this really the big life hack people make it out to be? Seven days for one pass means your whole family has to go in that same week, and if it rains or a kid gets sick, you just missed your shot. Free is nice, but I'm not about to plan my month around a piece of paper from the library.
