Back in 2015, I had to choose between a hostel in central Paris or a cheap apartment a 40 minute train ride out. I went with the apartment.

I had a similar choice in Berlin last year. I mean, the hotel was right by the Brandenburg Gate but it was so tiny I could barely open my suitcase. I ended up in a quiet neighborhood a few tram stops away and it was way better. You could actually hear yourself think at night, and there was a proper bakery on the corner. I feel like you see more of how people actually live when you step out of the main tourist zone. That extra travel time is kind of worth it for some space and quiet.

Sometimes you only have a few days in a city. Wasting an hour each day on trams to get back to a quiet area eats up precious time. A cramped room by the main sights lets you step right out into the energy, see the landmarks lit up at night, and just walk back. That convenience can make the whole trip feel bigger.

My last trip to Rome I stayed so close to the Trevi Fountain I could hear the coins drop. My wallet felt that choice for months after.
